Chanel’s Russian Winter: Pre-Fall 2009

Earlier last week, the grande house of Chanel unveiled it’s new pre-fall 2009 collection in Moscow, the collection paid homage to Russia, inspired by Czarist and folk elements but most importantly to Gabrielle Chanel’s long interest in the country.

Chanel had numerous connections with Russia, one of the most significant of which, unsurprisingly given her lively romantic history, was with a Russian lover, the Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich. He introduced Chanel to the splendour of the Tsars, and to the embroidery skills of his sister, the Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna. (www.independent.co.uk)

The jewelry and accessories were phenomenal, the lavish furs, bold velvets and brocades brought the theme to life. I really enjoyed Karl’s Russian trend this fall, it gave the collection uniqueness and excitement, something that has been lacking in the past year. On the other hand, Karl, being the creative pimp that he is, opened the collection with a 10 minute silent film (Paris-Moscow) to pay tribute to Chanel’s love for Russia. What do you guys think of the collection?

Some of the inspiration for the collection came from the Czarinas and their majestic style of the 19th century.

These cards are from the Ukraine not Russia, but they have intricate folk details, bold colors and wonderful jewelry.
