Adventures in Retail: Forever 21, Target & Toshop

I spent my weekend and earlier this week visiting some stores since I have been sick and away from NYC for a while. I decided to head over to Target in Queens, my favorite Forever 21 in Soho and finally visit the mother of all trends or so I’ve been told, the mighty TOPSHOP. Check out what I found and I’m not holding back.

Target seemed a bit quiet on Sunday but I have to admit it was very pleasant since I did not had to fight my way through baby carriages, wild toddlers and bored male companions. I looked through the new junior arrivals but didn’t find anything new. However what I did find was the Alexander McQueen line, remember that? yeah well it was 75% off and what was more surprising was to see that even on discount people weren’t buying, hmm.. I guess being a big designer doesn’t necessary mean you’ll be popular with bargain shoppers. I love Alexander McQueen but I was disappointed at his designs for Target, oh well… at least I can get them for $15.00 or less now ;)

Forever 21

Ahhh I love Forever 21 I have to say their eye for trends is amazing, the cute prom cocktail dresses were fab and I almost wanted to start spending immediately. I was also feeling their jewelry but what shocked me the most was a familiar necklace, a heart silver pendant with one solid side and a pave half.  This was a copy of the same Swarovski USB pendant I bought two years ago! We all know forever 21 likes to copy what’s popular but a Swarovski pendant?! haha I found it a bit out of place, check out the Forver 21 version and my past review on my heart usb pendant.

Topshop

I was super excited to visit Topshop, I have never been to London so hearing all this hype made me anticipate nothing but amazing finds. When I stepped in I was taken back by the size of the store, the jewelry is magnificent but a bit pricey think $110 for an oversized flower necklace but it looked fabulous. The clothes are trendy but the prices are very HIGH. Don’t get me wrong I did see 3 items that I liked but after seeing the price tag I decided to put them back on the rack. Many of the pieces do not seem out of the norm and the quality is not what I expected. I saw an Alexander Wang look alike dress made of paper thin jersey, I mean seriously I could take a t-shirt, shred it and have the same effect and save the $100+ on this dress.

Check out this jacket which is absolutely adorable, however I found a very similar one for .50 cents at my local flea market. See where I’m going with this? The items are cute but not superb and honestly in this economy is hard buying items that are over $100 and are not of lasting quality,  just a thought.

Much love always,

  1. Topshop is very overrated at times, but I feel like I need to visit the store myself. Hopefully I will get to go to NYC this summer.

    I don’t like low quality stuff either. It drives me nuts when buttons fall off or zippers break or hole appear after you’ve worn it once. It’s even worse if you paid a lot.

    Meg- I absolutely agree, Topshop has beautiful items but the quality reminded me a bit of a mix between forever 21 and H&M, although a dress I loved was very well made but the price was hurtful ;_;

    We don’t have Topshop over here, but we do have target (I like to pronounce it “Tar Jhay” hehe)and yeah, I know what you mean…all of the “*insert designer* for Target” have been pretty disappointing….kinda like they don’t really want to put a lot of effort in, because it’s only Target, lol.
    I agree wholeheartedly at the sentiments you express re: the shredded dress. I could never justify spending big money on something which is so easy to D.I.Y! I traipsed around the city the other day and saw so many such items…. I’ve got loads of ideas for sewing projects now!
