I hope everyone is having a wonderful joyous season with their families and loved ones, as my blog evolves I want to keep it personal and still focused on fashion. As the holidays approach I realize how lucky we are that we live in a place where we can afford to buy things that in other parts of the world are still unattainable. I also realize that although the U.S. and many other western countries are going through a recession, we still have some spare cash to buy something for the holidays. These upcoming weeks when you buy a cute top, a handbag, underwear, keep in mind where these things came from and who made them. Many of us are unaware of the oversea conditions of many manufacturing factories, many of these plants employ underage children and sometimes workers are expected to fulfill an obscene quota or work for over 12 hours daily. Many of you might also find this shocking but harsh conditions are also found in sweatshops in the United States, in L.A. and NYC many illegal workers from Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Africa are being used as slave laborers working an undisclosed amount of hours a day, many have been beaten and do not speak up because there are no laws that will protect them since they are illegal immigrants, so is it ok to treat a human being worse than animal because he or she is undocumented?
Every time you pick a shoe and a dress remember that it was made with hard work and sweat, the majority of oversea laborers and illegal workers do not have any health insurance and benefits. Be thankful for everything you have and can afford but at the same time be aware and also recognize the hard work that has been put into everything you own. Only we can change this situation, as consumers of a great nation we are the only ones that can send a clear and powerful message to companies and our government. Please become an informed consumer and spread the knowledge. Fantastic post. I wish more fashion blogs could turn a critical eye to the industry more often. It’s also worth noting that most of the sweatshop workers are women. Things need to change in the world.
@ Ashley
I absolutely agree, things need to change, in reality about 90% of the garment manufacturing workers are women, I hope things do change and at least when we buy something for the holidays we can think where it came from and who made it.
Much love,
