The Diary of a Techie and Girl Gamer: Sharyl Coppin

Computer programmer, hacker, techie, book worm, gamer, anime fan and over all one of the cutest and warmest person I know. I met Sharyl through my fiancee and I’m always amazed by how much this girl loves everything tech, she’s always prepared with her DS that serves as an e-book reader, dictionary, internet browser (can you believe you can do all that with just a DS?!) when her phone and I-pod touch are out of reach in her purse. Read the hilarious short interview with Ms. Coppin where we talk about tech accessories and nerdy racial stereotypes, yes – you read correctly, check it out ;)

  • When did you start becoming interested in gaming?

I started when I was about 6 yrs old and never stopped since then, I always loved it. I always carry my DS,  it’s my all around entertainment, I also travel with an assortment of games like castlevania, portrait of sorrow, rune factory and yes I am not ashamed to admit I carry my pokemon, lol. I’m  such a nerd. I also play console and PC games, I was into WOW but I don’t play it as much anymore.

  • What’s your favorite tech accessory at the moment?

My Ipod touch that serves as my newest e-book reader, organizer, RSS and Manga reader, blogging platform and through I-tunes I download seminars such as intro to philosophy etc.  I simply get lost in character with a good sci-fi story, game and oh… wi-fi spots!

Also my favorite un-tech accessory at the moment is this Franco Sarto bag I bought at Macy’s, its the prefect bag for nerdy chicks, its a mix of femininity and fuction, you can carry your umbrella plus all your S^%& in there , I love it! The pockets are great, it’s like my whole life can fit in that thing without carrying a bulky bag.

Aside from my I-pod, DS and games, I carry all my stuff like lipgloss, tea, and the holy sanitizer (a necessity in NYC)  my wallet and all the things I need with me.

  • Tell me about you, how would you describe yourself?

I just graduated as a computer programmer, I’m really easy going, laid back, I like to experience new things but I also like to help people whenever I can.

  • What is the biggest misconception people have about you?

I was at work one day training a new co-worker and she was surprised to realize I was really nice, she told me she thought I would give her a bad attitude.

  • What do you mean?

I don’t know why but people think I am the mean black chick with the attitude, I’m actually nice I’m not mean :)

  • Aside from ignorant misconceptions, is it hard being a female African American gamer/anime otaku?

Yes! In high school I was really into j-rock and people would say to me but “you’re black”, I believe preference in music is not written in your genes hahaha. I also realized that at anime conventions I’m not alone and there’s  black people that are nerdier than me, it made me prouder! I think nerds can channel their feelings better,  they have the advantage of the imagination.

  • You mentioned you like to help people in need, have you helped anyone recently?

While browsing through Craiglist’s platonic section I read that a U.K. soldier had been the victim of a hit and run and had been mugged while he was unconscious, at first I was skeptical but I decided to e-mail him to see if he needed extra t-shirts. The guy was for real, when he opened the door of his hotel room, he had bandages and a cane, he even showed me the police report, I felt really bad for him.  He said he didn’t have anything so I gave him the t-shirts, a hoodie, a puzzle book, earphones, a notepad and Brandy.  He was leaving the next day but felt really happy that I had gone through the trouble to bring him these things,  as a New Yorker I felt the need to help others in distress. He even told me “you are better prepared than most soldiers I know” lol, that made my day.

  • Thanks so much for you time Sharyl!

Sure, we should talk about my huge tea collection next time, lol.

If you would like to ask Sharyl a question feel free ask them in the comment section :)

Much love always,

Great feature, I love stuff like this! I’m totally addicted to my Nintendo DS. However, what I am curious about is turning your iPod Touch into an e-book reader :) Please do share?

@Amanda There are quite a few apps available for reading e-books. The one I like and use the most right now is Stanza. There is a lot you can customize(fonts, line spacing, colors, etc), and adding books to it is a breeze. http://www.lexcycle.com/
    Hope this helps.

    @Michelle Thank you ^_^

Wonderful interview! What an AMAZING thing to do for that soldier, very few humans are so kind and giving.

    @ Alice
I agree music should not be linked to our race or ethnicity it’s part who we are and what we like, Sharyl’s so funny and honest :)

    Much love,
