Dating Mr. Rabbit

My name is Alice and my bittersweet story begins two years ago in the cosmopolitan city of Wonderland.  I decided to move from the small town of Redqueen to pursue my dream of becoming a fashionista in the posh world of luxe pocket watches. I had landed my dream internship at the top watch design house, Tea Cup Time Pieces and within six months I was promoted to junior account executive. I couldn’t believe my luck, I was ecstatic and knew I had made it, but everything changed the day he set foot in the showroom, the production manager -Mr. Rabbit

Mr. Rabbit had a gentle but imposing presence, I found his scent and style irresistible.  The thought of seeing him would make my heart beat uncontrollably and although I’m usually timid when it comes to pursuing a prospective love interest, I would roam the hallways in my best outfits hoping to cross his path and exchange a few glances with this enigmatic and handsome being. I became enamored with Mr. Rabbit and in no time he began to pursue me as well.

I was naive and had dated the usual mad hatters but Mr. Rabbit was different.  I would stay late to meet Mr. Rabbit after work and surrender to his every whim.  Our brief encounters were like a beautiful dream that I never wanted to end, I fell completely in love and could not image my life or existence without him.

However,  as time passed Mr. Rabbit became more distant, he would travel to Asia and Europe for weeks, then one day he suddenly stopped returning my phone calls and my e-mails would be answered a week late. I couldn’t understand why things had changed so drastically,  he avoided conversing with me in the office and would tell me he didn’t have time to see me. Our long conversations became three minute excuses,  “Sorry Alice, you know my work comes first and I have a meeting right now” or “I’m sorry darling, I don’t have time to see you, have to catch a client, talk to you soon”.  Three months went by and I realized Mr. Rabbit had used me as a distraction from his usual traveling schedule, I finally decided to confront him.

We spoke briefly at an exit staircase, since it was inappropriate for people in the company to assume we were seeing each other, or at least that was his reason for such an informal meeting.  He told me he liked me but felt confused, he said I was a wonderful girl and any guy would be fortunate to have me, however he didn’t have the time for a relationship because his work would always come first.  At that moment,  my heart crumbled, I only felt the warm tears run down my cheeks, I couldn’t believe his words, he apologized and left me standing alone.

Two weeks had passed since our last meeting when Cheshire, our receptionist, was running late for a sample pick-up and asked me to drop off a yellow envelope in Mr. Rabbit’s office.  As I was making my way to that familiar room, I realized the envelope was opened, I couldn’t resist my curiosity and hid behind a wall to examine its contents, I pulled out a large photo of a beautiful woman and a small bunny eared toddler, there was also a small note saying “Hi darling, we miss you! Here’s Little Rabbit saying hello, love you always – Mrs. Rabbit.”
